They were suspicious of teachers who told them to<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0sit still, make less noise, and generally behave themselves &#8211; in short, they were typical teenagers! \u00a0He<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0compared this with the time he spent on a Saturday afternoon, as a Lieutenant with the volunteers, when\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">he had no difficulty in making a hundred men obey his every word of command on the nearby drill ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-516 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387492330-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"Cartoons\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387492330-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387492330-1024x608.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387492330.jpg 1804w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">It was then he had his idea: &#8216;Drill and Discipline&#8217;. Why not turn the Sabbath School boys into a volunteer<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0band or brigade, with the same military order, obedience, discipline and self-respect as the volunteers? A<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0programme combining games as well as discipline, gymnastics and sport as well as hymns and prayers<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0would appeal to the boys. William Smith planned the programme for this new idea with two friends, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">on the 4th October 1883 the three leaders invited the boys of North Woodside Mission Sabbath School<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0to join The Boys&#8217; Brigade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-515 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387484557-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"Cartoons\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387484557-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387484557-1024x663.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pathheadparishchurch.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/boysbrigade_12387484557.jpg 1484w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The new organisation&#8217;s badge was an anchor, and the motto &#8216;Sure and Stedfast&#8217;. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This was taken from the Authorised Version of the Bible, from the Epistle to the<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0Hebrews, chapter 6, verse 19: &#8216;Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul,<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0both sure and stedfast&#8217;. \u00a0The Object was also quite clear from the beginning:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;The advancement of Christ&#8217;s Kingdom among Boys and the\u00a0promotion of habits of Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect, and all that\u00a0tends towards a true Christian Manliness.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">(The word Obedience was added some ten years later).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For the first year the Boys only wore a Rosette as a badge, and the officers wore the civilian bowler hat.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0The following year the Cap, Belt, and haversack were brought together as the first complete uniform. The<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0Pill-box in common use during these days had no chin-strap and fitted close to the head, but it had two<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0distinguished rows of white braid worn at a jaunty angle.
